What did Grundtvig think about the church?

Grundtvig was a firm believer in freedom within the church. Firstly, citizens should have the freedom to attend the church of their own choice and not have to go to their own parish church. Secondly, pastors should have a high degree of freedom to practice their personal interpretation of Christianity and different views on Christianity should be able to coexist with in the church.

Also, Grundtvig focused strongly on the spoken word, as well as hymn-singing. Grundtvig wrote about 1500 hymns and is still the single largest contributor to the Danish hymn book today.

Grundtvig’s influence is also felt in the church today in the freedom within the church of pastors to have their own opinion and of people to choose their pastor. There is a wide variety of interpretations of Lutheran Christianity within the Danish church today, and some within the church even name themselves after Grundtvig, as Grundtvigians.
